The Credit Card Rewards Calculator estimates how much cash back or points you'll earn in a year based on your actual monthly spending across common categories — dining, groceries, gas, travel, and everything else — multiplied by each category's reward rate.
Rewards cards advertise headline rates like '5% on groceries' or '3x points on travel,' but those bonuses usually apply only to specific categories (and often have spending caps), while everything else earns a flat 1-1.5%. By entering your real spending habits, you get a realistic picture of your total annual rewards and your overall 'effective rate' — useful for comparing cash-back cards against points or miles cards.
Annual Rewards = Σ (Monthly Spend × 12 × Reward Rate)For each spending category, multiply your monthly spend by 12 to get annual spend, then multiply by that category's reward rate (as a decimal). Sum across all categories to get your total annual rewards. Dividing total rewards by total annual spend gives your effective blended rewards rate — a useful single number for comparing cards.
Example 1: Cash-back card — 3% dining, 2% groceries, 1.5% everything else
$400/mo dining, $600/mo groceries, $1,000/mo other spending — about $24,000/year total.
Annual rewards ≈ $456 (3% × $4,800 dining + 2% × $7,200 groceries + 1.5% × $12,000 other) — an effective rate of about 1.9%.
Example 2: Points card — 3x travel, 3x dining, 1x everything else
Same spending profile, but points are worth roughly 1.25¢ each when redeemed for travel through the issuer's portal.
You'd earn about 28,800 points/year; redeemed at 1.25¢, that's worth roughly $360 — slightly less than the cash-back card unless you can extract more than 1.5¢/point in value.
Example 3: Heavy grocery spender — 6% grocery card (Blue Cash Preferred-style, capped at $6,000/yr)
$700/mo groceries ($8,400/yr) — the 6% rate applies only to the first $6,000, with 1% on the remaining $2,400.
Rewards ≈ $384 ($360 from the capped 6% tier + $24 from the 1% overflow) — illustrating why category caps matter when comparing cards.
Methodology
Annual rewards = Σ (monthly spend × 12 × rewards rate ÷ 100) for each category. Effective rate = total annual rewards ÷ total annual spend × 100.
Points or miles typically have a redemption value of 1–2 cents each. A card offering 3x points on dining gives 3 points per dollar, worth ~3–6 cents in travel or cash. Cash-back cards skip the conversion and give a percentage directly.
Almost never. A 2% cash-back card earning $500/year in rewards is wiped out by just $2,500 of balance at a 20% APR ($500 in interest). Rewards cards only make financial sense if you pay in full every month.
Cards with elevated grocery rewards include the Blue Cash Preferred (6% at US supermarkets up to $6,000/yr), Citi Custom Cash (5% on top category), and Chase Sapphire Preferred (3x on dining and grocery). Compare our full card list for current offers.
