Two no-fee cards, two ways to use travel rewards
Capital One VentureOne and Bank of America Travel Rewards both advertise a $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fee. VentureOne earns 1.25 miles per dollar on ordinary purchases and more on certain bookings through Capital One Travel. Bank of America earns 1.5 points per dollar on ordinary purchases and advertises a higher rate for eligible bookings through its travel channel. The useful choice depends on where you spend, how you redeem, whether you hold a qualifying Bank of America relationship, and whether you pay every statement in full.
The figures here come from the issuers' VentureOne and Travel Rewards pages reviewed October 18, 2026. Offers can differ by application link and change. Both are rewards cards; interest on a carried balance can quickly exceed the value of miles or points. If your primary goal is to finance a balance, compare the APR and transfer fees separately from the rewards pitch.
| Feature | VentureOne | Bank of America Travel Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | $0 | $0 |
| Base earning | 1.25 miles per $1 | 1.5 points per $1 |
| Issuer travel-booking rate | 5 miles per $1 on eligible hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars through Capital One Travel | 3 points per $1 on eligible BofA Travel bookings |
| Advertised new-card offer | 20,000 miles after $500 in purchases in three months | 25,000 points after $1,000 in purchases in 90 days |
| Foreign transaction fee | None | None |
| Introductory purchase APR | 0% for 15 months | 0% for 15 billing cycles |
The welcome offers and introductory APRs have eligibility conditions and deadlines. Capital One's page says some applicants may receive different terms when checking eligibility and sets a 48-month history condition involving Venture-family bonuses. Bank of America says its online offer may not be available elsewhere. Verify the exact version shown before applying.
Base rewards: quantify the ordinary year
On $20,000 in annual purchases outside special booking categories, VentureOne earns 25,000 miles and Travel Rewards earns 30,000 points before any relationship bonus. If each is redeemed at an illustrative one cent per unit toward eligible travel, those balances correspond to about $250 versus $300. That is a $50 difference on $20,000 of spending. It is a comparison assumption, not a claim that every redemption on either card is worth one cent.
Before treating that $50 as decisive, ask whether you will use the relevant redemption. Capital One lets VentureOne holders use miles for eligible travel bookings through Capital One Travel or reimburse qualifying travel purchases made elsewhere. Its page says travel-purchase statement-credit redemptions must be made within 90 days of the purchase posting. Bank of America describes statement credits toward qualifying travel and dining purchases. Check each program's eligible transaction definitions, redemption minimums, and current value in the rewards terms.
If you spend only $8,000 a year, the one-cent illustration produces $100 in VentureOne base value and $120 in Travel Rewards base value. The difference is only $20. In that case, the card's ease of use, an existing bank relationship, or a near-term welcome offer may matter more than the base earning gap. A simple flat-rate cash-back card may also be competitive if your travel and dining purchases are too infrequent for convenient redemption.
When portal bonuses change the result
VentureOne's 5 miles per dollar applies to eligible hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. That is not a 5x rate on every flight, restaurant, or travel charge. Bank of America advertises 3 points per dollar on eligible BofA Travel purchases. The portal rate can create a substantial difference, but you should compare the final trip price and terms before booking solely for rewards.
Suppose you spend $2,000 on qualifying hotel bookings through each issuer's portal, and $18,000 on ordinary purchases. VentureOne would earn 10,000 miles on the hotel purchases plus 22,500 miles on ordinary spending, or 32,500 miles total. Travel Rewards would earn 6,000 points on the portal bookings plus 27,000 points on ordinary spending, or 33,000 points total before relationship bonuses. Under the one-cent illustration, that is about $325 versus $330. The base-rate advantage almost disappears because VentureOne earns more on those particular portal purchases.
Now add a practical travel-price check. If one portal charges $80 more for the same hotel and cancellation terms, extra rewards worth $40 would not make that booking cheaper. Check taxes, resort fees, refundable terms, hotel loyalty eligibility, customer-service arrangements, and whether the card's advertised multiplier covers the exact booking. Book directly when it produces a better all-in result for you, even if it earns the lower base rate.
The comparison also changes if your travel spending is mostly flights. VentureOne's published 5x list on its card page names hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars, not flights. Bank of America's travel-channel offer may include more travel categories under its terms. Check the issuer's current earning definitions for your planned purchase instead of applying the highest rate to every trip.
BofA Rewards can change the base-rate math
Bank of America replaced its earlier Preferred Rewards branding with BofA Rewards in 2026. Eligible enrolled members can receive a card-rewards bonus based on their banking and investing relationship. Bank of America's current card-bonus table shows Travel Rewards effective base rates of approximately 1.65, 1.87, 2.25, or 2.62 points per dollar across its listed tiers, versus the standard 1.5. Eligibility, qualifying balances, and enrollment rules apply.
For a household already eligible for a 50% bonus, $20,000 in otherwise ordinary purchases would earn about 45,000 points rather than 30,000. Under the one-cent travel-credit illustration, that is roughly $450, versus $250 for VentureOne base earning. This is a real potential difference for a qualifying customer. It is not a reason on its own to move large deposits or investments: compare banking fees, investment costs, available rates, and the rules for maintaining the tier before restructuring accounts for a credit-card bonus.
Do not assume a newly opened checking account instantly qualifies for the highest tier. Check how BofA Rewards measures combined balances and when a tier becomes active. If you are not already eligible, model both the base rate and the rate you can reliably maintain. A rewards calculation based on a tier you may lose in a few months overstates the card's long-term value.
Welcome offers: useful, but only on planned spending
VentureOne's page advertises 20,000 miles after $500 in purchases within the first three months. Bank of America advertises 25,000 online bonus points after $1,000 in purchases within 90 days, which it describes as a $250 travel or dining statement-credit value. On the common one-cent travel example, VentureOne's offer is about $200 and Bank of America's about $250. Bank of America requires $500 more spending to earn its advertised offer.
Choose a welcome offer only if you can meet the threshold with purchases you were already going to make and pay off. Spending an extra $500 for a $50 larger bonus destroys the benefit. Set a calendar reminder for the offer deadline and verify which transactions count; fees, refunds, and cash-like transactions may not count as purchases under the terms. If the threshold would pressure your budget, ignore the bonus and compare the ongoing cards.
Check prior-card and bonus eligibility before applying. Capital One's page says a person who received certain Venture-family new-card bonuses within the preceding 48 months is not eligible for this VentureOne bonus through that offer. Bank of America's online-only offer may vary elsewhere. Keep a screenshot or copy of the offer terms you used.
Redemption flexibility is part of the price
Capital One's travel-purchase reimbursement can suit someone who wants to book travel with a hotel or airline directly and later cover an eligible charge with miles. The 90-day redemption window for that statement-credit route means you need to monitor transactions. Its travel portal offers another route, but compare the cash price there with direct booking before redeeming.
Bank of America's statement-credit category includes travel and dining, which can be easier for someone who eats out regularly but travels only occasionally. The points are described as not expiring while the account remains open. Even so, a reward is useful only if you redeem it for an eligible purchase at a value you accept. Before opening either card, locate the current redemption terms and try an example relevant to your own spending.
Do not compare miles and points only by their names. Programs set their own redemption values and transfer or booking rules. Some travel rewards can have value that varies by redemption. This article's one-cent examples are a common measuring stick for ordinary travel credits, not a universal valuation of all possible options.
Fees, APRs, and paying in full
Neither card charges an annual fee or foreign transaction fee according to the reviewed pages, making both reasonable to consider for travel abroad. A merchant or ATM can still impose other charges, and a currency conversion choice at checkout can affect cost. Paying in the local currency when offered may avoid an unfavorable merchant conversion, but check the final rate and terms.
VentureOne advertises a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, followed by a variable 18.74%–28.74% APR, with a balance-transfer fee. Bank of America advertises 0% for 15 billing cycles on purchases and eligible transfers made within the first 60 days, followed by 17.74%–27.74% variable APR; its published introductory transfer fee is 3% during that 60-day window, then 5%. These terms are dated and can change, and your approved regular APR may differ. A balance-transfer decision should be made on debt cost and payoff timing, not travel points.
If you carry a $5,000 balance at a 20% APR, a rough full-year simple-interest cost is $1,000 before considering payments. That dwarfs the $50 annual base-rewards gap on $20,000 of spending. Rewards matter most when you can pay each statement balance in full and preserve the grace period. If you need to finance purchases, first compare the total borrowing cost and an achievable repayment plan.
Pick from your own spending pattern
Choose VentureOne if the smaller $500 welcome-offer threshold suits your planned spending, you frequently book eligible hotels, vacation rentals, or rental cars through Capital One Travel at competitive prices, and its mileage redemption fits your habits. Its 1.25x base rate makes it less compelling for an all-purpose spending card if you rarely use the 5x category.
Choose Bank of America Travel Rewards if you want a higher standard 1.5x earning rate, expect to use travel or dining statement credits, or already qualify for a meaningful BofA Rewards bonus. Check the $1,000 welcome-offer threshold and the exact relationship tier. Its 3x travel-channel rate can be useful, but only when the booking price and terms are competitive.
If you travel little, compare both against a straightforward no-fee cash-back card. If you spend heavily on travel and can use premium benefits, a card with an annual fee may be worth modeling separately, but only after subtracting the fee and valuing benefits you would actually use. Neither of these no-fee cards is universally best.
Common questions
Which earns more on ordinary purchases?
Bank of America Travel Rewards earns 1.5 points per dollar versus VentureOne's 1.25 miles per dollar before any relationship bonus. Redemption value and category bonuses still affect the dollar comparison.
Are either card's travel bookings always cheaper?
No. The issuer portals determine eligible bonus earning, but the all-in travel price and cancellation terms can differ from direct booking. Compare both before choosing a portal.
Do I need a Bank of America account?
The card's base earning does not require the highest BofA Rewards tier. The additional relationship bonus does require enrollment and eligibility under the current program. Verify the tier you can maintain.
Should I get one for the 0% APR offer?
Only after comparing the exact introductory duration, transfer fee, post-intro APR, and your payoff schedule. A card designed for a travel-rewards decision may not be the cheapest debt tool.
Source note: Rates, rewards, and offer conditions were checked on Capital One's VentureOne page, Bank of America's Travel Rewards page, and the BofA Rewards card-bonus table. Examples use a stated one-cent travel-credit assumption and exclude interest, taxes, and any booking-price difference.
